Patriarchy

One of the novel’s central projects is exploring the impact of a strong patriarchy on a society as well as on the individuals within that society. The story is set in a fantastical world that blends fantastical elements, such as magic and prophecy, with a historical era reminiscent of Puritan colonies in early American. Almost the entire book takes place within Bethel, a small village surrounded on all sides by a haunted forest. Bethel is run entirely by the Prophet, who is in charge of both the government and the church.
