Book 1, Part 1, Chapters 4 - 13 Summary

In Chapter 4, Eddie finds a piece of wood in which he "sees" something that can be carved from the wood. Although Henry is dead and Eddie realizes he is free from his brother's kidding, he is still self-conscious when Susannah and Roland see him whittling. In Chapter 5, Eddie hears trees falling and realizes there is a huge creature headed straight toward him. Eddie debates for a moment whether he should run or try to kill the bear with one of Roland's guns. As he thinks, he realizes his best option is to climb a tree out of the bear's reach.
