Chapter 14: Till Human Voice Wake Us-1990 Summary

Dillon sees that the dam is ready to rupture. He notifies Arthur Lee who comes out to inspect it at the same time Dillon was there. It begins to breach and Arthur can't make it back to his car. Dillon slows his truck so Arthur can jump in. As they drive off, the machinery in the dam is overworked and explodes. Dillon drives by houses warning the people to get out. Arthur Lee goes by foot to warn others. Tom and Jackie take separate cars to spread the word that the dam is bursting. The dam bursts and floods the entire region. The water surrounds Tom who holds onto a tree to keep from being taken by it. He swims to a nearby roof where he sees a child clinging to a chimney. The water swells and takes the boy out of his arms.
