Chapter 12 Summary

A driver takes Borlu to the border. The border guard asks Borlu numerous questions about his visit, even though Borlu has official paperwork that states his reason for crossing into Ul Qoma. Borlu thinks how ironic it is because if he were a tourist, the questions wouldn't be nearly as hard. The Inspector from Ul Qoma arrives and introduces himself as Qussim Dhatt. They go through Copula Hall, which is the official building between the two cities, and where Borlu gave his presentation to the committee. A driver then takes Dhatt and Borlu to Borlu's hotel. On the drive, Dhatt admits that he was just assigned the case a few days prior because they thought it was going to Breach.

Dhatt also says they interviewed Mahalia Geary's fellow students. They all thought she had just gone off on vacation for a few days...
