Chapters 9 and 10 Summary

In September 1983, Bettina is fifteen. She's arriving to Cardiss, a New Hampshire boarding school. She flies directly from France to Boston and then into New Hampshire, rather than going home to Chicago first. She's the only one of her classmates to arrive by taxi and without their parents.

When she meets her roommate, Holly, and Holly's parents, they give her a handmade rug for the side of her bed. It's a rug that matches Holly's. They tell her at first they thought she was related to the chocolate family because of her last name. When they get ready to leave, they take a photo of the girls together and Holly's father gives them each a ten dollar bill.

When Holly and Bettina go back upstairs, they see the door to the room next to theirs is open. Two girls are sitting...
