Chapter 50 Summary

When the storm ends, Culum finds Dirk and May-may dead in the Happy Valley residence. This is the first time he has ever seen May-may. He does not think she is beautiful and wonders how Dirk could have loved her so much. Tess is outside waiting for him and she begins to cry at the news of Dirk's death.

There is a great deal of activity and people are surveying the damage and clearing wreckage. There is very little looting, and repairs and rebuilding is already taking place. Vendors and shops are doing business. They meet Skinner and Culum tells him that the Tai-Pan is dead. Skinner has lost his printing equipment in the storm and decides to print the next edition using a hand press and then go see Culum for money.
