Chapter 42 Summary

The China Cloud sails at dawn with Dirk and Mary-may aboard. The wind increases several times, but Captain Orlov and Dirk can't find signs of a storm. They both have a bad feeling but the ship makes it safely to Hong Kong. Dirk and the captain decided that maybe they are just getting old. They talk and Dirk offers him the job as head of the fleet. Orlov states his conditions for accepting the desk job and Dirk agrees. He leaves Orlov in charge of moving May-may and the rest of the party to Resting Cloud.

Longstaff is upset about the article in the Oriental Times. The treaty has been repudiated and Longstaff is to be replaced. Dirk doesn't admit that he knew of the information earlier. The article will do what Dirk hoped it would and arouse the traders. Longstaff tells Dirk...
