Chapter 39 Summary

When Dirk arrives at the dock he is greeted by a Portuguese officer, who tells him that duels are outlawed in Macao. Dirk responds that he is aware of the law and that he won't be breaking it. They have to wait for Gorth, who hasn't yet arrived.

Gorth's mutilated body is found in an alley near Chinatown. A Portuguese patrol had heard screaming and arrived to find three Chinamen spearing Gorth. They vanished when the patrol arrived. After viewing the body, Dirk walks up on the hill and sits on a bench, thanking God for saving him. After being up all night, he would probably have lost the battle with Gorth. Dirk walks from the hill to the bishop's palace. He thanks him for the cinchona and tells him that it appears to be successful. Dirk tells the bishop he wants to...
