Chapter 38 Summary

Gorth goes to the English Club looking for Dirk. He accuses Dirk of arranging Tess's disappearance and slashes Dirk's face with a cat's claw whip. Gorth is ranting about how Tess can't marry Culum and Dirk knows that it is Gorth who set up Culum. Dirk challenges Gorth to a duel and tells Gorth to chose his weapon now. Gorth screams that Culum is poxed. Dirk tells him that the Club is not the place to fight but there is nothing he can do to stop Gorth and asks Horatio to be his second. Masterson agrees to be the other second. Dirk chooses fighting irons as weapons. He tells the men to arrange for a junk a sunup for the duel. He vows his vengeance on Gorth. He won't kill him but will maim him so he'll never walk or feed himself.
