Chapter 27 Summary

Dirk returns to Queens Town. On the way to his office, he looks at all the building that is taking place. He notices that there are few coolies working today and that the weather is hot and humid. He goes upstairs to the living quarters and finds Sarah. She tells him that her daughter Karen is dead. The new baby, Lochlin, is still alive. He tells her that the Chinese burned the Canton settlement just as he received Robb's letter. Dirk goes into Robb's room and finds him lying in bed, dead. Sarah tells Dirk that his last message to Dirk was that he never wanted to be Tai-Pan.

Dirk makes the arrangement for the funerals. As he walks to his house, he remembers Robb's first day in the Orient. He finds May-may in the garden and finds that May-may sent the children to her sister in...
