Chapter 21 Summary

Culum gives the signal for the beginning of the evening's festivities. At the sound of the cannon, servants hastily lit lanterns. The servants, under the supervision of Gordon Chen, had prepared marine lot number eight for the ball. Firecrackers and other fireworks are set off.

Quance is kept busy all afternoon, painting portraits of Robb's children. He changes and is ready to leave for the ball with Robb. Sarah and Robb have words before Robb leaves. Sarah is two weeks overdue to deliver her baby and can't attend the ball. She wants to know if he has made her travel arrangements yet. He says no. Robb says that he cannot return to England at this time and that he is thinking of her, the children, and their children when he made that decision.
