Chapter 18 Summary

Longstaff tells him of the arrival of the Russian archduke Alexi Zergeyev. Dirk doesn't let on that he already knows about the archduke, but he learns that a member of Longstaff's staff has been assigned to escort the archduke. Longstaff tells him of the peace in the Middle East and that Turkey has opened up the Ottoman Empire to trade. Dirk says that this is the best news he's had in a long time.

The men discuss the issue of the Russian archduke. Longstaff tells Dirk that the Zergeyev family is important in Russia. They discuss the political situation in Europe. There is always the possibility of trouble. They feel that the Russian archduke is in Hong Kong looking for information. They have it make it clear that Hong Kong is under the control of the British and not open to the interference...
