Chapter 6 Summary

Dirk leaves Jin-qua traveling in the sedan chair, having worked out a way to send the bullion to Hong Kong. It would be left in a lorcha with one painted red eye at the settlement wharf for transport to Hong Kong. During the ride, he analyzes his discussion with Jin-qua. The chair is attacked by three spearmen, but Dirk jumps out before being injured. Dirk attacks them with his knife and wounds them. He makes it back to the settlement and finds Brock there. Dirk's wound is treated by Brock.

Brock tells Dirk that the servants had left the settlement an hour before. This was the sign they were looking for as indicative of an attack. Brock suggests that they leave the settlement, but Dirk, who has to await the arrival of the bullion, says that he doesn't think it is necessary just...
