Chapter 5 Summary

After the meeting and their arrangement for guards, Dirk goes out into the garden around midnight. He is worrying about May-may when a Chinese man jumps over the wall. He has come with a message for Dirk. The man tells Dirk that Jin-qua wants to see him right away. Dirk, who is alone and aware of the price on his head, says he will see Jin-qua the next day. He studies the chop on the note and recognizes it as Jin-qua's and agrees to go with the man. They travel by sedan chairs being borne by very frightened and nervous Chinese. When they reach their destination, the coolies are paid and Dirk and the man make the rest of the way on foot. Jin-qua greets him when they arrive.
