Chapter 1, What Happened In Between Summary

In the Prologue, Mack and the boys are discussing the book "Cannery Row". Mack is suggesting improvements for the book such as chapter titles that allow the reader to know what the chapter is about without having to read the whole thing. Mack also states that he would like to know what the characters are like based on their actions and personality, not necessarily how they look.

Doc comes back to the Cannery Row in Monterey after the war. While Doc was gone his town had taken the fish catching limits lifted and in turn, caught all the fish leaving the Cannery Row a ghost town.
