Summary

In Chapter 15, Caleb goes to see Mrs. Hawthorne. She shows him a yellow-diamond engagement ring. Her husband purchased it overseas when he was in the Navy. She remarried after he died and it did not seem right to wear it. Caleb asks if she does not have family to pass it to and she says that she has outlived two of her kids and the third is ungrateful. Caleb will work to pay off what she feels is sufficient for the ring.

When Caleb returns to the house, both bedroom doors are closed. He considers knocking on Jane’s door, but decides to work in the yard instead. That night no one appeared. He can hear the television in Jane’s room. He has a peanut butter sandwich and works on the lyrics of a new song. He falls asleep thinking of Jane...
