Summary

In Chapter 13, Jane returns to work taking sales calls. While she is away, Caleb works in the yard. He soon has the blackberries and Scotch Broom cleared away. Jane joins him when she gets home early and enjoys the physical labor. Jane had never thought she could love a man so much. She felt safe around him. Caleb takes the bicycle over to Mrs. Hawthorne’s. Jane wonders if he is doing work for her there or just keeping her company.

Jane has Caleb fill out information for a health insurance policy. She wants him taken care of if he gets sick. Jane comes home one day and finds that Caleb has set up plastic black garbage bags on the ground making a long runway down a slope in the backyard. He tells her to put on a bathing suit.
