Summary

In Chapter 1, Jane is sitting in her car at the cemetery staring at her daughter’s grave the day after her daughter’s funeral. It is pouring down rain, which matches Jane’s mood. She tries to tell herself that her daughter cannot be dead, but when the windshield wipers whisk the rain from the windshield she sees her daughter’s grave and knows that it is true. Jane cannot believe that the day before she buried her daughter. Her mother and brother were there. Jane does not like them. She feels her own mother blames her for Melody’s death. Jane knows it is not her fault, but still feels guilt.
