Carmel is the city in California where the novel takes place. Susannah and her mother have just moved to Carmel when her mother remarries. The entire novel unfolds at different locations around Carmel.

Junipero Serra Mission Academy is the private Catholic school Susannah attends. It is also the school where Father Dominic is the principal.
