Chapter 13 Summary

Susannah has dinner at the Beaumont house, which consists of several courses served by waiters. Red doesn't eat anything. He just sits at the table drinking a glass of red wine. After dinner, Tad is about to kiss Susannah in the living room when Red comes in to get her to tell them about the restoration of the statue. While she's telling the story, Tad falls asleep in her lap—suddenly. Susannah realizes that Red has poisoned Tad, but Red says he didn't poison him, that he just drugged him. Red says he needs to talk to Susannah because she talks to the dead and he makes them that way. Susannah tries to spray Red in the face with pepper spray but nothing comes out of the bottle.
