Chapter 5 Summary

The woman ghost is more upset than she was the previous night. She's asking why Susannah didn't tell Red it isn't his fault. Susannah promises to tell him. When the woman ghost disappears, Jesse shows up. Jesse confronts Susannah about telling her father that he is living in her room. Susannah tries to get Jesse to talk to her about his death. She has found out he was supposed to marry his cousin, but mysteriously disappeared on his way to the ceremony. She doesn't know this from Jesse, though, but instead from a book her youngest stepbrother, Doc, found on the history of northern California. Jesse says he likes Susannah's father. Then he asks what's wrong with her hands and she tells him she has poison oak. Jesse too warns Susannah about the woman ghost. He tells Susannah she isn't who she thinks...
