Summary

Emmy tried to cheer Bunty up with more letters, but she also wrote to Charles. To Bunty, Emmy wrote cheerful things and little about her own life; to Charles she wrote about ordinary, everyday concerns. She felt bad about telling Charles how well Bunty was doing when in fact they had been estranged. She decided to tell him the whole story of her fight with Bunty. Emmy ended her letter to Charles by condemning her own behavior and saying she would understand if he wanted to end all communication with her. Charles responded very quickly with a letter of reassurance. He told Emmy he wished he could be there to comfort her. He also made her promise not to blame herself for William’s death.
