Chapter 26 Summary

Jason goes to the street where the telephone number has revealed the address. His mind is racing with thoughts of finding the Jackal and, also, with finding Marie. He goes to a phone and calls Bernadine at his hotel room, but there is no answer. Then sirens blare and police cars descend on the scene and Jason becomes agitated that his plan has been sabotaged and Carlos will get away. Among the officers there, Jason recognizes Bernadine and begins to suspect that the old friend of Alex Conklin is also a recruit of the Jackal's. Bernadine is castigated by the Deuxiyme and left standing on the street while the police cars race away. Jason then learns that he was about to walk into a trap and Bernadine and Alex had saved him.
