Chapter 19 Summary

Alex Conklin, the retired CIA operative, arranges everything for Jason to arrive. However, an old friend of Alex's, Franzois Bernardine, comes to the rescue. Like Alex, Bernadine is retired from the secret agency, but he says that he maintains his power because like Alex he knows "all the secrets." (Page 273) Lodging, a non-descript car, new clothes - everything is arranged so that Bourne can begin his hunt for the Jackal. Bernadine has heard all the rumors regarding Bourne and his supposed death in Hong Kong and even knows something of Alex's involvement in the whole affair. A disturbing phone call from Alex informs Jason that Panov has vanished. Meanwhile, Armbruster, the Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission is murdered at his own front door.
