Jason returns to Tranquility and plans are laid for the arrival of Carlos the Jackal, who is expected at noon. Now fifty years old, Jason is not in the shape he was fifteen years ago in Hong Kong. He is frightened and shouts abuse at his brother-in-law. He is also confronted with the problem of having to trust Fontaigne and Prefontaigne as they wait for the Jackal's arrival.
