Summary

The novel is narrated in the first-person past tense by the main character, Galadriel, who goes by “El.” In the first chapter, “Soul-Eater,” El was in her room when the most popular boy at school, Orion, chased a Soul-Eater inside and killed him, splattering his body all over El’s floor and infuriating her. El had powers of destruction and mayhem that were unparalleled, and she had been waiting to show them off. She lived alone with her hippie mother, who never used malia, which was a sort of power that relied on sacrifice and death of humans, animals, or objects. Malia not only relied on sacrifice, it eventually killed the user if it was not stopped. Everyone hated El because she was so unpleasant, so she knew the only way to get into an enclave, a large group of wizards who protected...
