Objective

During the time of the Civil War, the government was allowed to have a more far reaching role in society, becoming more of a leader than simply a group of those who govern. Today's objective is to talk about this transition and what it meant for those living in those times.

Lesson

1. Have each student make a list of the expectations they have of their government today.

2. In smaller groups, have students discuss what they think the people of that time used to think the government's responsibilities were. Why?

3. As a class, have the students make a list of the things a government should be in charge of. What things is the government in charge of now that they should not be in charge of, according to the students? Why?

4. Homework: Have each student describe what the perfect government might be like. What would they do...
