Objective

The objective of this lesson is to examine the author's view of the history of Rome, and why Roman history is important. Beard begins the Prologue with the assertion that "Ancient Rome is important" (15). She believes that Rome helps to define how we understand the world and view ourselves.

Class Discussion: What is the first line of the Prologue? How does making that line the first in the book emphasize the importance Beard places on studying Roman history? How does Beard believe that Rome defines us and our world? How does it define the world and us from high theory to low comedy? How is it a foundation of Western culture and politics? What examples of information that have been passed down from Rome does the author provide? How do these examples demonstrate the importance of the history of Rome?
