Objective: Part 1, Chapter 1 In this lesson, students will learn the characteristics of the nonfiction genre and find the characteristics that are consistent with the book they will be reading.

1) Individual in class writing - List as many nonfiction types or written material as you can think of - not necessarily books. What do the things on this list have in common? How do some of the things on this list differ from one another?

2) Partner activity - Go to the library and examine different kinds of nonfiction books. Ask the librarian for help if necessary. Write down the name of each book you examine.
