Objective

Book 1

The student will take notes on background information about Thucydides and Greece during the time of the Peloponnesian War.

The student will discuss the difficulties in assigning dated chronologies to this and other historical writings.

Lesson

1. The teacher will lead a discussion about Thucydides and Greece during his lifetime and before. Emphasis will also be placed on the preeminent position of Athens as the antagonism with Sparta began.

2. The teacher will address the idea of dating historical records and how many scholars over many years have come to agreement for the most part on the dates of events in Thucydides' writing.

3. Question and answer period will follow.

Homework:

Read Book 1 before the next class.

Note the importance of the defeat of Persia by the armies of the Athenians and their allies.
