The Great Offense

The great offense in the life of the silo is to express one’s desire to leave the silo.

Implant

These implants are put in female infants at birth to prevent them from getting pregnant. The implants can only be removed when a woman is married and she and her husband have won a lottery, allowing them a year to try to have a baby.

Juliette’s Watch

Although few people have them, Juliette has an old-fashioned watch that still works. She had tinkers with the watch until she manages to get it working again. After she is sent out to clean, Lukas confiscates this watch from a box of Juliette’s things.

Heat Tape

Bernard tells Jahns that he will not support Juliette as sheriff because she stole heat tape from his department. Juliette, however, says that she had the tape rerouted because...
