Summary

Part 3: Casting Off, 18 – 24

In Chapter 18, it appears that Juliette has been sent out to clean.

In Chapter 19, as Juliette tries to teach herself how to be sheriff, she looks at the views of the outside and wonders what the fuss is about. She has not yet pinned the star on her overalls. She looks over the evidence from the mayor’s death. Marnes will not give up the folder of notes on the murder. She also looks at the notes that Holston made about her in his investigation of her lover’s death. Juliette additionally reads the folder telling about Holston and his last days. She wonders why Holston and his wife wanted to leave.

She is surprised when Bernard Holland knocks on the bars and introduces himself as acting mayor. He suggests to her that Jahns died because of fatigue even...
