Summary

In Chapter 13, “A Midnight Visitor,” Katherine meets with Arthur after she slaps Kitty for the court incident. Arthur reassures her and reminds her of the 12 steps.

Ruth struggles to find work and continue paying rent. She appeals to Mrs. Mossler for a housekeeping position. Meanwhile, Gia secures “a job as an editorial assistant” within “a week of her arrival” (207). She starts seeing Douglas, confident she will make an excellent successor to his late wife.

Mrs. Mossler quickly realizes what a poor housekeeper Ruth is. One day, she appears in Carol’s room when Carol has her boyfriend Bryan over. She assures them she does not mind that they are undressed and will continue going about her work.
