Summary
In Chapter 3, “‘He Saith Among the Trumpets, Ha Ha,'” Katherine attends a service at First Presbyterian Church. She only attends three Sundays a month. She is not attached to the faith, but appreciates having time to think during the services. Throughout Altheah’s Bible verse reading, her mind wanders. She remembers when she first moved to New York and tried to shed the “Baptism of her troublesome youth” (50). She explored various denominations, landing on Presbyterianism. She quickly noticed how drawn single women are to the church. It is a good place to meet people, although Katherine often feels uncomfortable talking after the services. She sometimes feels this way at the Biedermeier, too.
After the service, Katherine chats with Altheah. She struggles to remain focused, wishing friendship did not require so much effort. In part, Katherine wonders if her shame comes from being...
