Summary
In Chapter 10, “Ubi Sunt,” Katherine confronts Mrs. Mossler again about breakfast. She shares the residents’ suggested solutions to the issue, but Mrs. Mossler is resigned to let it go. However, complaints continue to circulate at the Biedermeier. While Katherine starts cooking her own breakfast, Carol, Patricia, and Sadie start stealing food from the cafeteria. Lucianne decides to go without breakfast and drink coffee instead. Both older, J.D. and Josephine struggle to understand the change. Josephine comforts herself that she can “go to the Automat” and fantasizes about the wonderful things she might eat there (165). However, she soon remembers that Katherine said “the Automats were closing” (166). Josephine spends most of her time alone in her room. Her sister recently suggested she go into a home, but Josphine has no interest in giving up. Instead of leaving the Biedermeier, she starts stealing money from...
