Summary

In Chapter 17, Andromeda decides she will stand guard outside Tom's room in order to protect him, but Saba blocks Andromeda in her room. As they scuffle, Andromeda realizes that Saba is unnaturally strong and cold. Andromeda hugs Saba and realizes Saba does not have a heartbeat. She realizes Saba is part of the Evil Eye. Saba will disappear if the curse is eliminated, which means she is going to protect the curse. Andromeda hates the idea of hurting Saba, but she attacks. Saba's arm breaks off and begins “feeling its way back to its body” (148). Andromeda says “I'm sorry” when she has Saba broken apart so that she can leave the room. She passes by several Manifestations and finds a hyena which she recognizes as the “Evil Eye incarnate.” The hyena has bells that tinkle as it steps over Tom's dead body. The...
