Summary

In Chapter 13, Marie took Virgil to the Denver Indian Center, where she had found Rick Crow’s father, Reuben. Reuben told them that a few months earlier, Rick had said that he was working to set up legal hemp farming on the reservation. Marie and Virgil wondered if there was a connection between the farming and Martin Angel. Marie told Virgil what she knew about Rick that he would not want others to know: That he was abused, presumably sexually, by an older boy when he was a child. Later, Virgil went for a walk alone and went into a bar, where he ordered a beer and a shot of Old Crow whiskey, and began to drink for the first time in a long time.
