Chapters 30 and 31 Summary

In Chapter 30, Evie is taken to see the lawyer. He tells her that he wants her to attend the following day's inquest as it will make the family look better. Evie tells the lawyer exactly what her father had told her. Mr. Markel instructs her on how to act and dress at the inquest and how to answer the questions. Evie is lying when she tells Mr. Markel that her mother was not in love with Peter.

During the next day's inquest, Evie gets the feeling that the crowd in the courtroom does not like Joe. When her mother takes the stand, Evie can tell that the crowd is waiting for her to tell her role in the death.
