Summary

Eira visited Elvira, Lina’s old friend. Elvira told Eira about Lina. “All that stuff about how . . . saintly [Lina] was,” was not true (282). Lina was cruel, especially to Magnus. Elvira knew Magnus was jealous when he heard Lina planned to run away with Kenny.

Eira walked near the river, remembering how gentle Magnus was as a child. He used to get upset when Eira hurt insects. She could not imagine him hurting another person.

GG called to say that a dress they had found at the sawmill contained Lina’s DNA. They had also found used condoms containing Magnus’s DNA. “Eira felt herself falling” (290). When GG asked where Magnus was, Eira insisted she did not know.
