Summary
Part V is called “To Venice”. It begins with the interpreter who returned to the apartment drunk and raped Maria. The next morning, the interpreter told Korin that he was a video artist and poet and that art was the meaning of his life. He showed Korin some of his work. Korin struggled to concentrate on it and instead recommenced his monologue summarizing the contents of his manuscript. The next chapter of the manuscript again began in a different place and time than the previous chapters, this time Kasser, Bengazza, Falke, and Toot were travelling towards Venice in 1423. At an inn, an unknown nobleman offered them a ride in his carriage so they would not have to complete their journey on foot. They gratefully accepted the offer. When they got into the carriage, they discovered that the nobleman was Mastemann.
