Sexism and the Patriarchy

One of the most major, recurring themes throughout VenCo is sexism and the patriarchy. In the fourteenth chapter, aptly titled “Hex the Patriarchy”, Meena relays to Lucky how patriarchy, sexism, and capitalism work together to keep witches—and women in general—down. “The men who took power, they took away access to healing and control over one’s circumstances—they denounced anyone capable of magic or medicine. Because, if the people believed in magic, something that cannot—by its very nature—be commoditized, they couldn’t get people to buy into their system” (133) Witches were under control and suspicion for the power they offered because it had the possibility of removing power from systems of control dominated by men.
