Summary

The novel opens by setting the scene in Los Angeles, and introduces readers to the Maiden, the Crone, and the Mother. All three are described as having bright, ornamented clothes that reflect their personalities. The three women enter a building with a glass sign reading VENCO. The company is described as “a massive enterprise to headhunt, recruit, and place exceptional femmes into exceptional roles” (3). The receptionist at the desk is intimidated by the women, who then walk into a special room labeled “CEO: Coven Engagement Oracle” (3). The Mother asks the crone how much time they have for “the final two” to which the Crone answers in her native French that they do not have enough time (3).
