Summary
Lenny arrived for a meeting with Catherine, the head of the literary event she was scheduled to speak at. Catherine suggested that she wanted Lenny to focus on “the diversity question” (120). Catherine apologized for not booking Lenny for the festival in previous years, claiming she used to think Lenny was too “coarse” but that “times are changing” (121). Catherine praised Lenny’s latest book Woke Capitalism which suggests that working class white people are missing out on opportunities because of diversity initiatives at large companies. Catherine suggests that it appeals to readers because they are able to feel outraged on behalf of others rather than opposing diversity itself.
After the meeting with Catherine, Amanda and Lenny went for a drink at a pub in advance of Lenny’s appearance. Amanda asked for Lenny’s advice about building a career in journalism and Lenny was cynical...
