Summary

Delia visited Uncle Filippo at his house at seven the following morning. Uncle Filippo commented on how Delia looked like Amalia. Delia noted that Uncle Filippo was happy living his simple life and so she wanted to keep him ignorant of the previous night’s events with Caserta. Uncle Filippo rambled through stories, threatening Caserta, wishing for his own death, and reminiscing about old family stories. At one point, Uncle Filippo forgot to refer to Amalia using the past tense and spoke about her as if she was still alive. He felt that Amalia made the wrong decision 23 years ago when she left her husband. Delia let him continue to rant, confusing stories and dates.

Uncle Filippo explained how Caserta had gotten Delia’s father his job. Caserta did business with American sailors and Delia’s father would paint oil portraits of the sailors...
