Summary

London is a dirty and odorous city, and the people are called to dispose of anything that has a bad smell. The people throw everything they do not want in the river which no longer really even flows. Arthur tries to walk quickly, so the smell will not get in his nostril. Arthur likes to surprise his family with gifts, and he purchases his mother a pair of gloves on his way home from work. He also gathers water in a flask from the cast iron pump so that his mother will not have to go out. At home one of Arthur’s twin brothers drinks from the water right away while the other spits his out in laughter after hearing salacious comments spewn on the streets outside. The following day, one of the twins gets incredibly sick...
