Ellie Mack

Ellie Mack is a 15-year old child who is abducted by her deranged tutor. She is eventually impregnated and then starved to death while her family desperately searches for her whereabouts.

While she is the pivotal main character of the story, it is interesting to note that she does not make a direct appearance, as she is already dead at the beginning of the novel. Any insight that we are presented for Ellie's character is offered by supporting characters in a third-party fashion or through post-mortem soliloquies.

Ellie's disappearance is the defining act that changes the course of her family's existence for the rest of their lives. Her family breaks apart through the desperate search for her and can only begin to recover once her remains are found and it is confirmed that she is deceased.
