Summary

In Chapter 8, Laurel is greeted by a policeman as she enters the police station. She is soon joined by her husband Paul. They are informed that a dog walker has found a bag full of Ellie’s belongings and Hanna’s passport. The police are using this evidence to support their theory that Ellie had been a runaway. Laurel explains that they had been burgled a few years prior, which would explain how Ellie had come to possess Hanna’s passport. Laurel and Paul are then informed that the police have found human remains.

Chapter 9 is a flashback to Theo and Ellie discussing their summer plans just before Ellie’s disappearance. They discussed with high anticipation the prospect of finishing their exams and simply doing nothing once school has finished.
