Summary

In Chapter 10, the narrator describes how Maya found Kevin on a jogging trail after the rape and held a rifle to his head. Later, she moved away from home to attend music school so she could pretend to be someone else. In the present, as she believes she is being chased by a man through the park, she thinks she is an idiot for believing that she could think she would really be able to become a different person.

Maya pulls a knife from her purse, knocking out her cell phone in the process. She does not grab for the phone because she knows she will not have time to call anyone, only to defend herself. When the man moves toward her, she lashes out with the knife. Ramona, the owner of the bar in Beartown, gave her the knife to protect herself...
