Point of View

The narrative portion of the novel is told in the third person. While Maddy is the protagonist, the story also follows other characters including Jules, Kenny, and Wendy. These additional perspectives are important because the actions of numerous different people led to the violence perpetrated by Maddy on prom night. The narrator of the novel frequently divulges the thoughts and opinions of the character being followed at the moment. As such, the narration is not always neutral. An example of this occurs in Chapter 8. Here the narrator details a conversation between Wendy and Kenny, and the narrator says, “He didn’t sound super convincing. Why did he seem so defeated?” (159). These thoughts are Wendy’s, not the narrator’s, but they are never specifically stated as being Wendy’s.
