Summary

Part 1 begins with a transcript of Episode 1 of the podcast Maddy Did It. The podcast quotes testimony of Mrs. Amy Lector from the Springfield Massacre Commission. She explains that she heard a crash and then the lights went out. When she and her husband smelled smoke, her husband went outside to see what happened. Their son Cole came up the driveway covered in blood. Cole was one of only two survivors from prom at the country club. All he kept saying was “Maddy did it” (2).

The narration then turns to first period gym class on Mary 1, 2014. The girls do not want to run, but their coach makes them. Maddy Washington is afraid because her biggest fear, getting her hair wet in public, will come to fruition if they have to run in the rain. Maddy knows that rain could reveal her secret...
